In the not so distant future, it is common knowledge that wolves are extinct. They died out several decades ago, doomed by the greed and apathy of the human race. They were once proud and beautiful, and at one time people even pushed for their safety. Yet the importance of their lives fell through the cracks, dragging the Wolves into the abyss with every failed petition. After the species fell to it's knees some time ago, the final wolf died in the wild, the legendary Last, who died of a broken heart with his kin gone. Their existence vanished and became distant memory as time flowed on, and while it wasn't the only species to be wiped from the Earth, the Wolf remains at the forefront of lore. These days, sightings are reported in the woods, but are always dismissed as false, and so the Wolf remains a myth. So it seems.
North Bay, Washington State, and the year is 2133. Things are much the same as they were in the 21st century; cars still pollute, the nation is still in debt, and humans complain that their city governments do nothing for the people they serve. Such troubles are inconsequential to the dogs of North Bay, who seem to have gone by the wayside in the eyes of the people there. Strays are numerous, and there is no longer an effort to control their expanding population with the city nearly bankrupt and barely able to address more pressing matters. It's rumored that the dogs are organized in some odd fashion, but what do humans care? They go about their daily lives and ignore what is directly in front of them. The strays gather up scraps to survive, not unlike the humans they share the streets with. North Bay isn't a rich city by any means; abandoned construction projects ugly the skyline here and there, pot holes roughen the streets, and the homeless beg in the shadows of large corporations. Yet life above ground is much sweeter than the musty existence beneath the pavement, and the dusky pitch of the underground is home to an unexpected resident.
Wolves have inundated the dizzying maze of the abandoned subway system, beneath the feet of the very people that denounce their existence. They haven't always been here, but it would surprise most just how long they've taken residence in the dark. Even the dogs of the streets don't know; they themselves mock the rumors of wolves and sneer at the idea of beasts cowering in the dark. All the wolves have are each other, but even that is hardly comforting. Two packs strain to share the confined underground, and tensions between them are high. One of them is prideful and elite; home to those whose blood is 'pure'. For a long time the purity of wolves' blood has diminished as humans attempted to strengthen the population by back breeding with dogs. As such, those pure of breed are few, and those who are become almost legendary and revered. The other pack is less selective; any wolf that comes to them becomes family, and are protected regardless of purity. With such tension in the underground, it is speculated that the wolves may be making their return, and soon. With every mission into the dark of the city and the sanctity of the woods at midnight, they draw ever closer to revealing themselves, and leaving the realm of fiction.
